SPEED, AGILITY, AND STRENGTH TRAINING

2008 Player Development Training Class Begins in December 2007

Soccer is the nation's most rapidly growing sport and its level of competition continues to grow. Because it is so competitive players need strong, refined athletic skills to perform well. The greatest difference between average and premier soccer players is their ability to execute the skills of the game with speed.  For those who are not properly prepared for the increased level of play, the result can be diminished participation, disappointment, and in some cases injury.

Playing the sport well requires explosive dynamic athletic activity. In terms of speed demand it requires short quick bursts and flat-out of straight ahead sprints. To complicate matters athletes must have the agility to perform ball-handling skills in an evasive and defensive manner.

Dawn Strout (MMFC's Speed and Agility Trainer) providing some instruction at the Soccer Maine Annual General Meeting last Spring 2007

In January 2004, MMFC began offering a speed, agility, strength, foot skills, and fundamentals programs to all registered and non-registered MMFC players.  This specialized program focuses on improving the qualities of speed, agility and quickness through soccer specific drills and techniques used by the top collegiate and professional clubs around the world. Improving speed of play depends on more than just a player’s physical ability. Players must also be able to execute the skills of the game with speed. This program will focus on both maximizing athletic performance and teaching players how to integrate these qualities into their game to improve their speed of play.

Dawn Strout CSCS, M.Ed  is the coordinator for our speed and agility training.  She is the President and owner of B-F.A.S.T., Inc, LLC working with various high school, college, and recreational athletes and is the Director of the Human Performance Lab for Maine Medical Sports Medicine Prior to the above, she was the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the 32 athletic teams at Bowdoin College from  1997—2006 and was the Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for the University of Maine Orono from 1995—1997.  She has 15 years experience in exercise science, strength training, and conditioning training field.

Our speed, agility, and foot skills program is mandatory for all MMFC players and the 2008 session runs for 16 weeks.  Each session is one and a half hours in length.  For more information on the MMFC coaching staff, and coaches participating in the program, please click here.
