The Maine Metro F.C. U-17 Boys team had a very successful tournament in Almere Holland. (Holland Cup 2005 - July 27th thru 30th.).

ITINERARY:
1. The team flew out of Boston on Thursday July 21st to Amsterdam.

2. Traveled to Cologne Germany by bus July 21st thru July 24th. The team played one exhibition match in Ense, did some site seeing, and returned to Amsterdam on Monday July 25th.

3. The tournament began on Wednesday July 27th., and ended on Saturday July 30th.

4. The team returned to Boston on Sunday July 31st.

OVERVIEW:

The team placed 4th out of 11 teams in the U-17 boy’s bracket.  We lost on penalty kicks in the semi finals to Amaikak Bat from Spain who went on to win the U-17 Boys division (Interesting note: we scored with 30 seconds left on the clock in the semi-final game and the goal was disallowed – had it not been disallowed, we would have been in the finals against the Lyle Redwings from Illinois).

The tournament had a few setbacks because of weather.  This caused a number of delays and rearranging of schedules.  The fields were fabulous (tournament play was not allowed on the grass fields during or after it rained).  We were forced to re-schedule a number of games to alternate locations with turf (similar to Fitzpatrick stadium in Portland),and a number of games were shortened.  The overall competition was excellent.

TEAM RESULTS:

  1. MMFC vs. Ense-Hoingen (select U-17/18) in Cologne Germany MMFC won 3-2 (Exhibition Match) (This match was played before the Borussia-Munchengladbach’s game with Hoingen #1 – a very formal presentation before a crowd of 200-250 fans...the teams walked out onto the field in pairs, (just like the big international matches…excellent experience for the boys)

  2. MMFC vs. AS '80/Holland (Holland Cup) in Almere, Netherlands MMFC won 7-0

  3. MMFC vs. U.E. Valencia /Spain (Holland Cup) in Almere, Netherlands MMFC lost 2-1

  4. MMFC vs. Rainbow United/Holland (Holland Cup) in Almere, Netherlands MMFC tied 1-1

  5. MMFC vs. Maaløv Boldklub /Denmark (Holland Cup) in Almere, Netherlands MMFC won 1-0

  6. MMFC vs. NFC Kellinghusen/ Mülenbarbek /Germany (Holland Cup) in Almere, Netherlands MMFC won 6-0

  7. MMFC vs. U.E. Valencia /Spain (Holland Cup) in Almere, Netherlands MMFC lost 2-0 (Quarter finals)

  8. MMFC vs. Kværkeby IF/Denmark (Holland Cup) in Almere, Netherlands MMFC Won 5-1 (Quarter finals)

  9. MMFC vs. Amaikak Bat/Spain (Holland Cup) in Almere, Netherlands MMFC (game ended in a 0-0 tie), but lost after penalty kicks (Semi-finals)

  10. MMFC vs. U.E. Valencia /Spain (Holland Cup) in Almere, Netherlands MMFC (game ended in a 0-0 tie), but lost after penalty kicks (consolation game for 3rd and 4th place).

The team's overall record was 5 wins 4 losses, and 1 tie.  The team scored 24 goals in regulation and had 8 goals against.

The team arrived back safely in the states Sunday July 31st with the 4th place cup in hand.  This was an excellent experience for our players, coaches, and parents/chaperones who accompanied the team.  All things considered the team represented the state of Maine and the USA very very well.
