MAINE METRO U-13 GIRLS SOCCER TEAM COMPETES IN PHILADELPHIA TOURNAMENTOn May 12, 2006, thanks to a generous sponsorship from Scarborough Downs, the Maine Metro FC U-13 Girls soccer team flew to Philadelphia, PA, to compete in the 18th Annual Eastern Pennsylvania Invitational Classic. This all girls premier soccer tournament has grown to be one of the most popular tournaments in the Northeast, with teams hailing from as far north as Canada, all the way down through Virginia. This year over 167 teams participated. The Maine Metro FC U-13 girls team is made up of 12-13 year old girls from six communities in the greater Portland area and is coached by Josh Needle and Jenn Allen of Scarborough. Maine Metro F.C. which was founded in 1999 is a youth premier soccer club, and a member of USFM/Soccer Maine, and the USYSA (US Youth Soccer Association) based out of Westbrook, Maine. The team faced tough competition at the tournament, but played to their full potential and achieved an impressive 6th place finish in their bracket. Coach Needle was very proud of his team, saying, “The overall play of the girls was quite impressive. We’ll take that speed of play that we were exposed to and bring it back to Maine. This weekend was a victory in many ways. Nice Job!!” While in Philadelphia, the team was also able to visit the Liberty Bell, enjoy a Philly cheese-steak sandwich, and pay tribute to Rocky by running up and down the steps of the art museum.
